Parental Involvement In Education

Ever wanted to be more involved in your child's education, but felt you didn't know how? Don't worry! A number of parents out there are also saddled with this dilemma.

In case, some of you are already involved, by way of home-based activities such as helping with the homework, term projects and reading or even
school-based activities such as open houses and parent-teacher meetings, there is a lot more that one can do. But first, let us understand why the level of involvement should run deeper!

Long before a teacher enters a child's life, it is the parents who fulfill that role. When a child says her first word, recites a rhyme or says her ABCs, it is thanks to all that she has learned from her parents. This role continues even after she begins going to school.

So how is that parents can continue being active participants in their children's education?
  • Set aside time for homework - an hour or two. Whatever be the case, ensure that they stick to it.
  • Regularly supervise their progress in school and stay in touch with their teachers.
  • Show by example - make sure to read the newspaper and other books in front of your children. This will encourage them to read.
  • Get them to do their chores; tidy up after playing, clean up after meals.
  • Have a family meal together at least once a day.
  • Read to your child everyday, at least for 10 minutes.
What all this serves to do is set a daily routine, which might prove to be boring to an adult, but actually provides a sense of security to children. If a parent has a positive attitude towards learning in general, children will develop a similar outlook. So also, when children have a problem with studies/grades, tackle it with caution. Raving and ranting is useless. It just doesn't work. Students who get better grades usually have parents who encourage and praise them.
