How does one tackle school? Some parents just do not have the time, even to attend Parent-Teacher meetings and Open Houses. Some feel intimidated by teachers at school, as they are not comfortable in any other language but their own, or because they lack confidence in their educational qualifications.

But educators today, understand. If time is a constraining factor, and you are concerned about your child, you can request a meeting with a concerned teacher or the class teacher, by sending a note requesting a meeting, at a time suited to your convenience. These days, school diaries have pages where you can seek an appointment with the teacher and vice-versa.

Language too need not be a deterrent. Your child can come along to help translate what the teacher is saying and most educators in fact go out of their way to make parents comfortable.

Similarly, lack of a good educational background need not be daunting. Certain schools have declaration forms in diaries that read like this:

Areas where Parents can help the School:
  • Substitute Teaching
  • Arranging Study Tours/Picnics
  • Art & Craft, Flower Arrangement, Stuffed Toys, Embroidery, Candle-making and the like.
  • Arranging workshops for teachers/parents.
  • Arranging sponsorship for events
  • Assisting in the school newsletter
  • Reference and resource material, career guidance
  • Medical Help
As you can see from the above, most of the areas listed do not require a degree in rocket science. All you require are organisational skills and therefore getting involved is not as scary as you might think.

Research has proven that parental involvement at a deeper level has the following benefits:
It helps control absenteeism - Children whose parents are involved at school ensure they hardly miss school.
Encourages better performance - Children score higher grades and generally do well in school
Fosters positive attitudes and behaviour -Children have better social skills and are well adjusted

Educators encourage this synergy between schools and parents, knowing that it helps in bettering a child's performance.
