Vacation Time Blues
It's Vacation Time!!!
It is the end of term. The kids' vacations are to begin in a couple
of days. This vacation you have no plans lined up as your spouse and
you are unable to avail of leave at the same time. You expect to be
flooded with relief. After all, it means no homework or projects to
follow up on. None of the usual worries: Did they make it to the school
bus on time? Did they carry all the text and notebooks? Did the maid
pack their lunch boxes? So just why are you not feeling elated?
Because, just two days into their holidays, when you are drowning
in work, you expect to be swamped with phone calls from the children,
using the dreaded phrase that you have come to hate, "I am bored!!!"
the other whining about "how he screamed at me" or "beat me". Work
and deadlines just don't allow for scope to think of options to keep
the kids occupied.
But don't despair. Things are not as bad as they seem. For starters, find out from your neighbours and other parents in the vicinity, about vacation classes or workshops. Enquiries will reveal that there are classes, which are reasonably priced and run for anything from 5 days to a fortnight. These classes train young ones in art and craft, candle making, dancing. you name it! The age groups are large and this makes it convenient to enroll kids of varied ages in the same class.
If this doesn't appeal to you, try one of the numerous nature or outdoor camps that oganisations like the YMCA and others organise. It will keep the tykes occupied for at least a fortnight.
Then of course, there are computer classes or swimming lessons that certain clubs offer. This may or may not be viable, depending on distances involved, especially in the metros, where one needs to consider pick up and drop home facilities.
Another option is sending the kids to your native place - if this is indeed an option. Grandparents are usually happy to have the kids over for a short stay, as long as the kids aren't too troublesome or too young.
Ultimately, it is up to you to make vacations eventful and fun for
your children. Take them out to a favourite superhero movie, to a
popular local eatery once a week, the museum, aquarium, a fun fair,
the beach or even to your office for a lark!
Whatever your state of mind or constraints, ensure that you spend some quality time with your kids, in whatever manner you choose, but one that suits your children, so that they do not feel ignored, useless or just plain BORED!.
