An Ounce of Prevention
A computer virus is a written program and is always an executable
file (exe). A computer virus must piggyback on top of another programme
or document in order to get executed. Once it is running, it is then
able to infect other programs or documents.
- Run a secure operating system like UNIX or Windows NT
- Install Antivirus software, a program that detects and destroys viruses
- Avoid programs from unknown Internet sources. Stick to licensed software to avoid viruses or run a virus check on the CD/Floppy or program file to be installed.
- Make sure Macro Virus Protection is enabled in all Microsoft applications. NEVER run macros in a document unless you know what they do or you are sure about the source of the document.
- Alternatively, you can run a virus check before you open a document.
Follow these pointers and you can have a healthier relationship with your PC!
