Homework helps students develop self-reliance and work skills. It helps students understand that school is not the only place for academics. It does mean fewer hours for recreation, leisure, and other learning opportunities so we have tried to create a system that maintains a balance between the two.
Homework Guidelines- An Overview
The overall picture is a mix of regular practice for Math and English, and a staggered homework schedule for other subjects. The amount of homework increases as the student advances in age and grade levels. Please refer to the homework log (table below) for this year, for a clearer understanding of work mix. Vacation times are utilized for journals and book reports, which encourage independent thought, free expression and the habit of writing. Students may also take up a project or work on a hobby. This provides an opportunity for parents to engage with their child's learning.
For Grades 1 to 5, the emphasis is on reading and theme-wise collation of information. Homework is a maximum of half-hour study, three times a week for Grades 1 to 3; and 45 minutes, four times a week for Grades 4 and 5.
The intensity of work increases for Grades 6 and 7. Students are introduced to independent study, based on application of principles taught in class. This includes, apart from written work, reading assignments, completion of maps and diagrams, collection of material for projects etc. Estimated homework time is one and a half hours, daily. For Grades 8 and 9, this is increased to two hours or more, per day.
