Thematic learning is an interdisciplinary approach which provides opportunities for students to relate classroom learning to real life. English, Math, Science, Social studies, Technology, Art, Music, Dance, Drama and Sports, are interwoven under a broad theme or topic. There is a seamless flow from subject to subject as topics are covered. The beauty of this approach is that it is relevant to the child and the child is able to relate learning to real life. This approach also helps students use their strengths (Multiple intelligences) to learn and make presentations. The learning is primarily activity based helping students’ construct knowledge.
This year, we had two themes across grades 1 to 5. The themes were, “Unity in Diversity” in the first term and “How Things Work” in the second term. Students from grade 1 to 5 explored the theme at different levels. They then celebrated their learning through the vertical project, where they shared their learning through presentations which is the culmination of a theme where students showcase their learning.
Listed below are some learning that were showcased.
Theme – UNITY IN DIVERSITY
Theme – HOW THINGS WORK
The grand finale of the vertical project presentation was the dance, music and band. Students of grades 1 to 4 presented dances to showcase their learning while the students of grade 5 created a musical band with seed shakers, coconut shell, drums, tabla and bongo. Manavi Srinivas of grade 5 A composed and sang a song that summarized all the concepts learnt in sound.
