The Nike Hypervenom Football promotion event started in Bangalore. This was Phase I of the event. The format of the tournament was 1 vs.1 where two opponents face off against a common goal keeper. In phase1 the objective was to score as may goals in 90 seconds. The top three talents were selected bas on skills and over-all performance in the match. The selected was a Spanish coach named David. I was ranked number 1from the Bangalore knock-out after 2-1 victory. We were given the shoes to wear for the event but had to return them after our matches. It was a little hard to control myself from running way with those awesome shoes but somehow I got myself to return them in one piece.
A couple of days later I got a call from the selectors saying I had qualified for the Delhi knock-out( phase II). In all honesty they sounded more excited than I was. I had really only gone to have fun and to bunk one day of school. Little did I know of this journey ahead of me so my dad and I decided to take the offer(one adult had to travel with me). The trip was all expense paid. All I really had to do was show up.
In Delhi our accommodation was arranged at the Royal Orchid Hotel. Mt stay in Delhi was for I day and night. At the venue I met the rest of the qualifiers from Bangalore. Delhi and Mumbai and another lucky 3 who had been chosen from a lucky draw via FB. They gave us each our very own hypervenom shoes to keep. It was finally time for the final showdown.
The first part was a round robin format where each person had to play every other person. Also the person to score the most goals would win. But the time limit had been increased to 2 minutes. It might not sound like much but it was exhausting. Every match was agony because I had played the whole event with an ankle injury. I felt like giving up due to the pain and exhaustion but I kept pushing taking on one match at a time. Finally there were only 6 left as the rest had been eliminated. Only the super 6 were left off the hundreds of bids who tried their luck from each state. After stopping the first match due to an excess of pain I received medical attention and was really unsure on whether to continue or not. I decided to play my semi final match but I was taking it easy. After trailing by a goal I managed to score within 5 seconds remaining. So I had myself a tie breaker. I took this chance and capitalized by scoring in 10 seconds of the tie breaker and that was the match. I can’t exactly remember the finals but everyone said I dominated winning 2-0. May be I was pumped after the awesome comeback. All I know is he barely touched the ball. Then my treat was a match against Baichung Bhutia which ended 1-1 draw. I also won a sponsorship contract for 1 year with Nike.
It was a great experience and I felt lucky to win.
