Vertical Project

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Thematic learning is an interdisciplinary approach which provides opportunities for students to relate classroom learning to real life. English, Math, Science, Social studies, Technology, Art, Music, Dance, Drama and Sports, are interwoven under a broad theme or topic. There is a seamless flow from subject to subject as topics are covered. The beauty of this approach is that it is relevant to the child and the child is able to relate learning to real life. This approach also helps students use their strengths (Multiple intelligences) to learn and make presentations. The learning is primarily activity based helping students’ construct knowledge.

This year, we had two themes across grades 1 to 5. The themes were, “Unity in Diversity” in the first term and “How Things Work” in the second term. Students from grade 1 to 5 explored the theme at different levels. They then celebrated their learning through the vertical project, where they shared their learning through presentations which is the culmination of a theme where students showcase their learning.

Listed below are some learning that were showcased.

Theme – UNITY IN DIVERSITY

Theme – HOW THINGS WORK

The grand finale of the vertical project presentation was the dance, music and band. Students of grades 1 to 4 presented dances to showcase their learning while the students of grade 5 created a musical band with seed shakers, coconut shell, drums, tabla and bongo. Manavi Srinivas of grade 5 A composed and sang a song that summarized all the concepts learnt in sound.

PODs Presentation Assembly

Friday, April 12, 2013

On 14th March, the middle school and senior school students presented their Art Pods work, which were displayed during the assembly. The display included the authentic Wall Hangings called Torans, inspired by African motifs. Brown sheets, rustic and vibrant shades of poster paint were used to make it. They finished the pieces with tassles and threads. While doing it they also learnt the nuances of African folk art – which is very earthy, strong and beautiful.

Grade 6 was introduced to the artist Raza. They learnt  the use of geometric figures and the use of the “Bindu” which was his trade mark and grade 7 did a reproduction of the artist Paul Klee’s seamless grid-art form by learning to use water colours for the first time.

During the Art Pods class for grade 9-11the students made photo frames of mount board employing a mosaic concept using coloured craft paper. The finishing was done with OHP sheets and a stand. They learnt precision in cutting and gluing to form a final pattern. Worli painting using acrylic paints on black sheets was made. They also made papier-mâché decorative items. They learnt the basics of papier-mâché using newspaper. They used Areca palm plates as a base. They also learnt to dry, add layers and finish it by painting with acrylic paints.

The students of grade 6 presented a lively Band performance to the tune of   “Wonder Wall”, and “Knocking on the Heaven’s door”. The Band members consisted of Singers, Darsh Kadam and Advay Ramgopal, Drummers- Shivam Kapil and Milan Machiah, and Guitarist Aniket Thyagarajan and Pradyun Singh.

The last whole school assembly finally ended with resounding applause.

Makala Habba

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

‘Makala Habba’: a day for the Kindergarteners, by the Kindergarteners and of the Kindergarteners, was recently celebrated at Inventure Academy. The Kindergarteners staged the play ‘Sindbad and his Adventures’. The play featured Sindbad and his friends travelling to various planets in search of answers to make planet Earth a cleaner and better place to live in. The play was quite entertaining and enjoyable, as it was an amalgamation of segments involving oratory, dance, musical and creative efforts. The kids danced to the tunes of – I like to Move it Move it, Ice-Ice Baby, Gangnam Style, etc.

The show was par excellence as the Kindergarteners took charge of every aspect of the play, right from narration to making the props for the stage. The audience that comprised the children’s parents, teachers and the Management of Inventure Academy, were in awe of the talents showcased.

An award ceremony followed the play. Each child was awarded a title for his / her unique talents. A grand closure to the day was marked off by the Graduation Ceremony of Kindergaten 2 (K2) children. Inventure Academy celebrated their transition from Kindergarteners to 1st Graders. It was a treat to watch each child wearing his/her graduation hat and singing ‘This Little Light of Mine’.

The day culminated with a party specially hosted for the children and their parents at the Kindergarten Block.

Inventure in collaboration with ECOSLATE worked towards creating awareness regarding environment related issues and solutions.We had Daily Dump install 4 manthans on the school premises + 12 leave it pots which help us to recycle our dining waste to compost.   Students, faculty along with the kitchen and the dining staff went through the hands on process to learn Composting. Compost hence generated is sold at school events to generate money for our community outreach programmes. We run an environment POD that helps students learn innovative ways to recycle waste. Primary students learnt to recycle paper and generated paper using the used paper at school.

Students of the Environment POD conducted tetra pack drives. Tetrapacks hence collected were donated to a NGO called ANU which uses them to make products like bags and mats and purses. Newspaper is regularly collected and sold to the local scrap dealer to generate money for our Green initiatives. So far we have collected Rs 12,000

Inventure Academy’s Wider World Programmes

At Inventure Academy, we recognise the importance of investing in our children’s futures. We endeavour to provide high quality education in a supportive environment and aim to equip our students with the tools necessary to succeed in the world.  Effective Career and College Guidance opportunities are important facets of any high school programme and we at Inventure Academy have been developing our strengths in these areas to better support our graduates.  We would like to share with you how Inventure Academy has been addressing this very important need.

College Guidance at Inventure Academy and the “Univariety” Programme

The process of college and course evaluation can be a stressful and confusing experience.  The stress and confusion is exacerbated by increasingly complicated admission processes, highly competitive entrance tests with sky-rocketing cut-offs and lack of clarity on which courses to pursue, given a particular student’s interests and strengths.  Understanding application procedures for colleges and universities abroad can also be somewhat daunting and may require sound guidance on home ground.

Inventure Academy has been working with ‘Univariety’ for the past two years to help address these issues.  Univariety specialises in the field of university access and higher education counselling across multiple destination countries. It is a part of the Singapore based ‘International Education Gateway’, which has operations in UK and India. The team of counsellors at Univariety has assisted a large number of students over the last 10+ years in making sound higher education choices. They have helped Inventure Academy children in successfully applying to colleges and universities within and outside India for the past couple of years.

The Univariety Programme is delivered through a series of workshops for 11th and 12th Grade children conducted in school, along with keeping track of and completing certain date – bound milestones in the college application process. The Univariety service is a combination of an online and offline system of supporting the entire university access / application process.

The current 10th grade students will create an online profile upon their return from summer holidays in June, 2013.  The 12th class students (current 11th grade students) have already created their profiles and are in the process contacting Univariety counsellors to clarify doubts.  This year, two of Inventure Academy’s faculty, including the Vice Principal, will be trained by Univariety to understand the processes involved in providing an effective in-house guidance system. Ramesh Hariharan, the Vice Principal at Inventure Academy, has had 28 years of experience in counseling 11th and 12th graders on careers / college guidance.  He has actively aided students to prepare their Statement of Purpose / College Entrance Essays, and for the TOEFL, IELTS and SAT (Verbal) exams in schools located in Japan, India and Malaysia.  Our hope is that in a year, the training received from Univariety, will equip the two appointed faculty members to take on the role of College Advisors, who can then be supported by Univariety online.

Inventure Academy provides this support to students as a part of our overall offering for senior school without an additional cost. To learn more about Univariety and the scope of their operations, please click on the following link: http://www.inventureacademy.com/faculty/guest_faculty.php

Career Guidance at Inventure Academy and the “Pathfinder” Programme

Being a 10th Grader at Inventure Academy is both exciting and challenging.  While the 10th Grader revels in the fact that he / she will soon complete the important milestone of the ICSE or the IGCSE Board Exam and will enter the final two years of schooling, the student is also filled with the responsibility of making choices about the course of his / her future education and career options.  However, as the famous Chinese adage proclaims, “with every obstacle, comes a new opportunity.”

Inventure Academy, in conjunction with the” Pathfinder Programme from WorkWise”, has been providing career guidance testing for all 10th Graders, as well as new students in the 11th Grade for the past two years.  WorkWise is a career guidance and ‘worklife’ development firm based in New Delhi.  WorkWise, with over 30 years of experience in Psychology, Media, Management &Training and Career Guidance, was conceived by alumni of IIM, Ahmedabad and the Xavier School of Management (XLRI).  In the realm of Career Guidance, WorkWise works specifically with students in grades 10 -11, helping them choose careers that suit and excite them.

The Pathfinder Report has already been generated by WorkWise for our current 10 Graders and the new students in Grade 11. The Pathfinder Programme is provided by Inventure Academy as a part of our overall offering for senior school without an additional cost.

To learn more about WorkWise and understand how the Pathfinder Programme can help your child, please visit: http://www.inventureacademy.com/faculty/guest_faculty.php

Internship Programme

The Inventure Academy Internship Programme (which started in 2006) is a two week – long, wider-world career experience that focuses on a student’s area of interest, and furthers leadership, inter-personal, intra-personal and job skills. Placement sites include (but are not limited to) professional, educational, and cultural institutions; community service organizations; legal and medical offices; businesses; arts organizations; and professional performance groups. Each student’s experience is unique and they can develop their own personal goals.

The students of Grade 11 (ISC and A/AS levels) are compulsorily required to pursue an internship. Students are not paid for internship coursework. They receive a recognition certificate once they successfully complete the programme. Placement in relevant organizations /companies is facilitated through Inventure Academy or contacts provided by parents.

We are confident that Inventure Academy graduates will be equipped to take on challenging higher studies options and future career opportunities, underpinned and empowered by our collaborative efforts as partners in the education of your child.

Watership Down by Richard Adams

Watership Down is a moving, stirring tale of courage and the struggle to survive against the odds.

The story starts on a warm summer evening, in a peaceful meadow, the home of two rabbits, Hazel and his younger brother, Fiver.

Fiver is only a little rabbit, in fact the runt of the litter, but he has what some people call sixth sense. He foresees that a great danger is about to destroy the warren, and he is sure that something dreadful will take place if they do not leave, and fast. But Fiver finds that no one believes him.

Hazel, concerned about Fiver’s vision, rounds up a small band of faithful, brave rabbits and together they set out on perilous journey to find a new, safer home, to start afresh.

Finally, led by Hazel and guided by Fiver’s gift the rabbits reach Watership Down – a rabbit’s paradise. But it is here that they encounter the greatest danger of all.

The cons: There aren’t many negatives to this book, but something I didn’t like was the descriptions. They become very long and winding and you tend to get a little lost along the way. It takes ages to get to the real action, which is why I had to skip pages a lot.

The pros: There are so many ups to this book that I don’t know where to start!

What I like most is that the author has been able to give each character a distinct, unique personality even though everyone who features here is a rabbit! Hazel in the main role, the hero, is a natural leader, resourceful, and always ready to help. Fiver – timid, cautious but sensible and practical. Bigwig, a hefty rabbit and a great ally, even though he is a little short tempered. Each rabbit has their own likes and dislikes.

Another thing I enjoyed is that the writer has made up a whole new separate rabbit language called “Lapine”, though they communicate in human language too. It includes words such as “hrair”, “ni – frith”, and “tharn”. I’ll leave you to read the book and find out what they mean! It is hard to make up another realistic sounding language so I thought this was very ingenious.

The story draws you in, captivates you, and by the end you feel like you were actually in the book, going through all the triumphs and difficulties that Hazel and the rest were going through. This book is a combination of everything: adventure, suspense, mystery, humour, sorrow, joy and much, much more. And I can definitely advise you to………

The Feluda Stories by Satyajit Ray – review

‘This book is perfect for anyone who loves adventure, suspense, shocks and mysteries!!!’

When one thinks of detectives, what usually comes to mind is Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. The Feluda Stories by Satyajit Ray is a refreshing change with its fast-paced action, mysterious twists and turns and intricate plot. What is unique about this detective novel is that it is set in various different places in India.

Feluda plays the role of the main sleuth, and like in all great detective stories there has to be a sidekick. Feluda’s slightly gullible, younger cousin Tapesh is the second banana here. Tapesh is the narrator of this story and tries to follow in his cousin’s footsteps. Feluda is the ideal investigator: sharp eyed, alert, witty, resourceful and brainy.

They befriend Jatayu, a famous thriller writer and together the trio travel all over India, uncovering many shady schemes, defeating several sinister criminals and managing to wriggle out of some very sticky situations, always emerging victorious in the end.

The great thing about this book is that you never really know what’s going to happen next. There’s always a surprise waiting for you just when you think you know who the culprit is! The story is jam–packed full of handy detective info including how to pick locks, disguise yourself and write coded letters. The down side is that the plot is too rather complex and hard to follow properly so there are some parts which you just have to skip. Also the climax was a bit of a let-down, because it lacked excitement and activity which was not what I expected.

All in all, this book is perfect for anyone who loves adventure, suspense, shocks and mysteries!!!

My world of colour by Maya P – Poem

Dive into Maya P’s world of colour and unleash all of your senses

Blue is the colour of drowsiness;
Blue smells like a clear water creek in the
woods;
Blue tastes like a warm sweet blueberry, its juice
running down the throat;
Blue feels like a downy soft bed to sink into;
Blue sounds like the oceans gentle ripples
lapping against your feet;
Blue looks like soft, sleepy dreams whispering
in your ear;
Blue is the colour of drowsiness.

Green is colour of freshness, cool and pure;
Green smells like mint, rejuvenating and
refreshing;
Green tastes like a ripe, lemony fruit, just
plucked off an old oak tree;
Green feels like delicate silk, lightly brushing
against your cheek;
Green sounds like the evening breeze, blowing
through the young leaves;
Green looks like a satin ribbon, pretty and
dainty;
Green is the colour of freshness, cool and pure.

Orange is the colour of liveliness;
Orange smells like a fragrant blossom;
Orange tastes like a juicy tangerine, tangy and savoury;
Orange feels like a happy tiger’s luxurious fur;
Orange sounds like a peal of tinkling laughter;
Orange looks like children playing gaily;
Orange is the colour of liveliness.

Purple is the colour of royalty;
Purple smells like a strong sweet aroma;
Purple tastes like luscious grapes and rich wine;
Purple feels like a soft deep velvet robe;
Purple sounds like a kingly, regal voice,
commanding and ordering;
Purple looks like lush tulips swaying in the late
night wind;
Purple is the colour of royalty.
